Taipower Yantian Substation
Implemented Solution
Substation systems often operate with equipment from multiple vendors, which can lead to incompatibility issues in technical specifications and create challenges in system management and control. To address this, ICP team implemented IEC 61850 communication technology to achieve systematic integration across the substation’s information systems. For Taipower’s Yantian Substation, ICP established an intelligent dispatch center that integrates generation unit data with a renewable energy forecasting system, enabling smarter, more efficient power plant management.
Challenges
Challenges
During the process of assisting Taipower in advancing the smart transformation of the Yantian Substation, ICP encountered several major challenges, particularly in system integration and on-site implementation. The foremost challenge was the integration of heterogeneous equipment. The substation utilized products from multiple vendors, each adopting different communication protocols and data formats, resulting in limited interoperability among systems. To overcome this, ICP implemented the IEC 61850 standard, performing extensive customized configurations and testing to achieve information integration and real-time communication across all substation systems. The second challenge lay in the implementation of system intelligence transformation. Transitioning from a traditional operational model to an intelligent dispatch center required not only a complete restructuring of the data architecture and control logic, but also ensuring that the integrated system could operate stably while providing real-time visibility of on-site conditions. This imposed stricter demands on both system design and testing processes. Another challenge was helping on-site personnel adapt to the new system. Taipower operators needed time to familiarize themselves with the updated workflows and interface, so ICP needed to develop an intuitive user interface and provided comprehensive training and technical support to ensure a smooth transition. In addition, cybersecurity and system stability were key challenges. As the intelligent system connected multiple devices and cloud platforms, inadequate protection could have exposed it to potential cyberattacks. ICP implemented multi-layered cybersecurity mechanisms to ensure the security and stability of both data transmission and system operations. By overcoming these challenges, ICP not only enhanced the management efficiency and grid stability of the Yantian Substation but also demonstrated its professional expertise in smart grid integration and real-world system implementation.
