Luyuan Substation Large-Scale Energy Storage Project

Implemented Solution
To enhance grid resilience and support renewable energy integration, Taipower established an energy storage system at Luyuan Substation.

The system adopts Enhanced Dynamic Regulation (E-dReg) and Function of Periodic Power Modulation (FPPM) technologies, enabling rapid response to power demand, stabilization of grid frequency and voltage, and peak load management.

In terms of safety, the energy storage system complies with dual IEC standards for operational safety and cybersecurity, ensuring zero-risk performance. This project not only strengthens power supply stability but also shows Taipower’s active commitment to energy transition and net-zero carbon goals.

Challenges

Challenges

When implementing an intelligent energy storage and grid management platform, ICP encountered several major challenges.

First, ensuring system stability and high availability was critical to guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 operation.

Second, cybersecurity risks require the adoption of multi-layer protection mechanisms to secure data and control commands.

Third, integration across diverse devices and communication protocols demanded a high degree of flexibility and compatibility. The user interface also had to balance ease of operation with robust access control to minimize human error.

Finally, the platform needed strong scalability to accommodate the continued expansion of energy storage sites and new functional requirements in the future.
